Flood Relief Operation in Southern Punjab

Pakistan’s worst humanitarian crisis is deepening and magnitude of devastation is increasing day by day. The floods, which affect more than 2000 lives so far, continued to unleash untold miseries and destruction all over Pakistan. Besides, at least 2 million people have been left homeless. The United Nations has declared the devastation of the floods more severe than the combined affect of 2004 tsunami, 2005 Pakistan earthquake and the 2010 Haiti earthquake.
In Such a critical and horrible condition all aspects of life required special attention for the rehabilitation process of affected people. Vets Care Organization Pakistan has been trying hard to provide relief to the flood affected animals in southern Punjab. The main focus has been to save the animals from any expected diseases through vaccination, providing emergency treatment to sick and injured animals, providing feed to the affected animals as there is a severe shortage of feed for animals because flood has destroyed 100% agriculture in area. VCO volunteers are working in different areas of Southern Punjab for disaster relief activities
VCO in collaboration with World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) distributes 160,000 Kg of TMR (Total Mixed Ration) in Kot Adu (District Muzaffar Garh). Sanawan Village, Lalay Wali, Pati Ghulam Ali, Latkani, Tiba, Kot Adu City, Dera Din Panah, Pir Chaki, Chak No. 522, Chak No. 527, Chak No. 528, Moza Chaudhrian Wala, Moza Kotla are main target areas.
About 4000 bags of concentrates have also been distributed in various areas of southern Punjab in collaboration with Four Paws International.
Apart from this, large number of animals have been vaccinated, de-wormed and treated for different diseases. Vets Care Organization’s veterinarians are volunteering themselves to help these animals.

We are thankful to all those organizations that supported VCO’s Flood Relief Operation particularly WSPA and Vier Pfoten. We commit to continue our efforts to rehabilitate the affected animals.

Vaccination & Deworming Programme for flood affected animals

The severe aftermath of the devastating floods in the Pakistan continues while the Vets Care Organization also continues its efforts for the well-being of the affected animals. In the beginning, the focus remained on the rescue and emergency treatment along with the vaccination for HS and provision of emergency feed for the animals which resulted in saving the lives of large number of animals with provision of feed and protection from any possible outbreak of Hemorrhagic Septicemia. Thousands of animals were taken care off in the on going disaster.

As the situation turned better now, in this recovery phase, the rehabilitation is going on and the animal welfare needs have been changed. As a next step, it was assessed that the flood affected animals are at a greater risk of Foot & Mouth Disease while most of the animals were already affected by the internal parasites which were causing stress to the animals and affecting their health badly. Taking notice of the circumstances, Vets Care Organization in collaboration with the WSPA initiated a special Vaccination & Deworming Programme in Kot Adu (District Muzaffar Garh) in order to vaccinate the affected animals against Foot & Mouth Disease and to administer dewormers to the affected animals to help them get rid off loads of internal parasites and to protect them from potential diseases and malnutrition.

This programme was held on October 30-31, 2010. Two teams of twenty volunteer vets participated in this activity. 2659 animals were de-wormed while 2741 animals were vaccinated for FMD.

Vets Care Organization Pakistan is thankful to the WSPA for their support. We are also thankful to all those volunteers who participated in helping these animals.

While this programme saved several hundred animals, there are many more left behind who are at risk. Moreover, as the weather starts turning cold, the animals without shelters are expected to face severe challenges in the cold nights.
