World Veterinary Day (25th of April 2009)
Last saturday of April is celebrated as the "World Veterinary Day" every year. This year, Saturday 25th of April was celebrated as World Veterinary Day around the globe with the theme, "Veterinarians and Livestock Farmers: A Winning Partnership" The WVD is an event to celebrate the key contribution of the veterinarians to the society.
Joining hands with the International Community, Vets Care Organization Pakistan (VCO) declared the WVD as Free Treatment Day at the University of Veterinary & Animal Sciences Lahore to mark the World Veterinary Day. The objective was to provide free treatment as well as medicines to all animals coming for treatment at the Outdoor Hospital of the University of Veterinary & Animal Sciences Lahore. The University of Veterinary & Animal Sciences Lahore is the oldest veterinary institute in Asia (established as a Veterinary School in 1882) and is therefore playing a key role in animal health. The outdoor hospital of the U.V.A.S is a famous and historical veterinary hospital in Lahore and therefore, people bring their animals here for treatment and expert veterinary advice. Vets Care Organization had therefore planned to set up free treatment arrangements at the university's outdoor hospital to strengthen the relationship between veterinarians and livestock farmers/animal owners on the eve of World Veterinary Day.
The Day started with the formal inauguration by the UVAS Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Nawaz. Present at the occasion were also Vets Care Club Patron Prof. Dr. Talat Naseer Pasha (Dean Faculty of Livestock Business Management UVAS), Prof. Dr. Naseem Ahmad (Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Science UVAS), Prof. Dr. Muhammad Sarwar Khan (Professor of Medicine/Former Chairman CMS), Mr. Attique-ur-Rehman (UVAS Registrar), Dr. Kamran Ashraf (Associate Professor Parasitology), Dr. Asim Khalid Mahmood (Assistant Professor Medicine), Dr. Zia-ur-Rehman (Lecturer Medicine/ Advisor, Vets Care Club), Vets Care Club President Waseem Shaukat and others. A large number of veterinary students voluntarily remained present at the Outdoor hospital whole day to provide veterinary care to all incoming cases on that day. Special announcements regarding free treatment were made through electronic and print media few days before the final day. Large number of animals (including sheep, goat, horses, donkeys, buffaloes etc) were received at outdoor, examined and provided free technicalities and medicines. There were many serious cases (like PPR, surgical cases, colic etc...) which requires expensive medication and many of the times, poor farmers remain unable to get their animals treated due to financial problems, and animals remain sick and go through painful life. This event especially provided an opportunity to help such farmers and their animals. People were happy to see free treatment of their animals and were thankful to the Vets Care Organization and Vets Care Club for free treatment of their animals. "I wish that every day would be a World Veterinary Day, so that we can get free treatment and medicines for our animals", one farmer commented, after getting free treatment of his goat. Free Vaccination & Treatment Camp (Tuesday, 18th of August 2009
UVAS Out Reach Station, Sittar Wala in Shiekhupura district Vets Care Organization, Pakistan organized a “Free Animal Treatment & Vaccination Camp” at UVAS Out Reach Station, Sittar Wala Lahore on Tuesday 18th of August 2009. The objective of the camp was to highlight the “Importance of vaccination program against Hemorrhagic Septicemia (HS)” in farm animals.
Hemorrhagic Septicemia, a bacterial infectious disease caused by Pasturella multocida is one of the threatening diseases of animals which badly affects the health of animals and reduces its production. The disease have high mortality rates, hence is responsible for huge economic loss to the farmers. Almost 34.4% deaths in animals have been reported due to HS in Pakistan. By decreasing production, HS leads to economical losses of 1.89 Billion Rupees annually, according to estimation. The disease is preventable if proper vaccination schedule is adopted. Animals must be vaccinated against HS thrice in a year. Due to deficiency of proper guidance and resources, farmers don’t observe proper vaccination schedule that causes loss to animal health and farmer’s income. This camp was organized to help the farmers and their animals in this situation.
Prof. Dr. MUHAMMAD Arif Khan (Chairman, Department of Clinical Medicine & Surgery, UVAS) inaugurated the camp. 27 Veterinary students (Members of Vets Care Club) from the University Of Veterinary & Animal Sciences, Lahore under the supervision of Assistant Prof. Dr. Hassan Saleem (In charge Out Reach Station) and Dr. Zia-ur-Rehman (Advisor, Vets Care Club; Lecturer CMS) participated in the camp. According to official records 316 animals were vaccinated for HS, 72 sheep and goats were de-wormed and treated, 16 Pregnancy tests were performed and a number of sick animals (including cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, horses & donkeys) were treated, most of which required expensive treatment that VCO provide free of cost. Each case was explained to the students. The camp provided a golden chance to the participants for acquiring practical skills. It saved the animals who were to suffer from HS, and those who were suffering from various serious diseases.
VCO is thankful to Hira Laboratories and Symans Pharmaceuticals (Pvt) Ltd Lahore for providing vaccine and medicines for this camp. VCO is also thankful to the University of Veterinary & Animal Sciences Lahore for providing transport facility with out which the camp was never possible. Five Days Free Veterinary Treatment Camp November 22 - 26, 2009 Bakkar Mandi, Lahore
Every year on the eve of Eid-ul-Adha, a huge number of animals are transported to the provincial capital from far away areas of the Punjab. This long distance transportation does not occur under any regulation and hence badly disobeys animal rights. Animals are overloaded on the vehicles and non stop transportation is practiced usually without feeding and watering during traveling. The worst situation is seen when these animals are loaded and unloaded from the vehicles. The long distance transportation puts extreme stress to these animals. After reaching to their destination, these animals are not provided with proper care and management usually due to the lack of proper facilities and unawareness. Stress of transportation and extreme weather conditions causes many diseases in the animals. One of the major problems that appear in these animals is lameness. Most of the animals are suffering from lameness due to severe arthritis which is extremely painful conditions for these animals. Instead of removing the cause of arthritis with proper veterinary treatment, people tend to use local anesthetic agents for de-sensitizing the animals for sometime in order to sell them. They don’t realize that the animals will again feel pain (after gaining the senses when the affect of anesthetics is finished), until they are treated properly. This is usually due to unawareness and financial problems. This is an alarming condition for the animal welfare NGO’s in Pakistan.
Taking notice of these circumstances, Vets Care Organization Pakistan (VCO) has been arranging free veterinary treatment camps at different localities of Lahore on the eve of Eid-ul-Adha regularly every year since 2001. Likewise previous years, Vets Care Organization Pakistan and Vets Care Club of University of Veterinary & Animal Sciences Lahore organized a four days Free Veterinary Treatment Camp at Bakkar Mandi Lahore on November 22-26, 2009. About 92 veterinary doctors and veterinary students provided their technical services to the animals from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily during this camp. According to the official records, 1526 animals were clinically approached and provided with the free technical services and medicines in Bakkar Mandi Lahore.
The camp was visited by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Nawaz (Vice Chancellor UVAS) on various days during the five days camp. The visitors were briefed about the aims and objectives of the camp. They observed the work and appreciated the volunteers, working for this noble cause.
VCO is thankful to Star Laboratories (Pvt) Ltd, Symans Pharmaceuticals (Pvt) Ltd, Selmore Pharmaceuticals (Pvt) Ltd, Sana Laboratories (Pvt) Ltd, Marush (Pvt) Ltd, Zaidi’s International, Medi-Vet (Pvt) Ltd, Prix Pharmaceuticals, Eterna International (Pvt) Ltd and Pakistan Medicos for providing medicines for this free veterinary treatment camp. VCO is also thankful to the University of Veterinary & Animal Sciences, Lahore for providing transport facility to the camp participants. We are also thankful to the visitors for encouraging the volunteers. Special thanks to the whole team of our Medicine Bank, who worked day and night to make this camp possible. Last but not the least, VCO extends its heartiest gratitude to all those volunteers who participated in the camp and provided their technicalities for this noble cause.
Along with providing free treatment, we have been making the people aware of the animal's rights and urging them to realize the importance of animals and consider them as santient living beings. Over the years, things are now changing and people are becoming more aware of needs of animals. That’s why, this year there were relatively less number of sick animals as compared to previous years. People were a little bit more caring for their animals. However, it is just a beginning and we have to do much more. Vets Care Organization Pakistan commits to continue its efforts to make Pakistan an ideal friendly and cruelty free environment for animals where humans respect all earthlings. |
